View MoreBorn and raised in NE Washington DC, Riggs Park is where I spent my life from 1970 until the mid-90s. In terms of schools, I went to Bertie Backus JHS and Calvin Coolidge SHS (Class of '87). I’ve loved GoGo music my entire life! I started going to the GoGos in the mid-to-late 80s when I was almost old enough to get in. Initially, I had to pay the outside security $10 to get in because I was too young, then I paid the cover charge on top of that. My first GoGo experience was with Rare Essence at the Metro Club. Soon, I developed the habit of buying GoGo PA tapes. Often, I'd encounter someone selling tapes from the previous show, and I'd always add one to my collection. Before long, I had stacks and stacks of tapes. Later, I purchased PA tapes from the following:- Nico “the GoGo-Oligist” Hobson, who had a stand at 12th and F Sts in downtown DC.- Carlton aka “Mu,” who had a stand in front of UDC.- Rob Wheeler aka Kingofthegogobeat, whom I met on the subway at Fort Totten. He used to blast his GoGo music so loudly on his headphones that I could still make out the tracks. We struck up a conversation, and we’ve been close since then.- Woody Woods, from his UM WEAR MADNESS COLLECTION store in Charles County MD.- GoGoJohnStore, whom I met on FB.- OLDSCHOOLGOGO.COM, which you already know!I also acquired many GoGo shows via trade with other collectors such as Brian “Crank Dat” Smallwood.As for my GoGo collection, by the early 2000s, I had innumerable PA tapes and CDs that I stored in several Rubbermaid organizers. In 2004, while moving with the help of some guys, my collection mysteriously disappeared! I never found out who took them, and I blamed myself for trusting people too much and not paying enough attention to my cherished collection, which I had spent most of my life compiling. Seven years later, amidst a toxic divorce, my brother, Mike (actual blood, y’all) "loaned" me a Little Benny CD. It was the '88 LITTLE BENNY AT POMONKEY. I kept that CD for years! At that time, it was the only GoGo in my life! I listened to that CD EVERY DAY! It became and remains my all-time favorite GoGo show because Little Benny is my guy and it symbolized the love and connection between my brother and me. From there, I began rebuilding my collection, making it bigger, stronger, and more crankin’.The GoGo Time Machine:A friend of my sister’s, Darrick Jay Coleman aka DeeJay, a talented DJ, contacted me. I had known DeeJay as a friend and brother over the years. He had just launched an online radio station called DJC RADIO (www.DJCRADIO.com) and knew about my passion for GoGo and my collection. He asked me to consider having my own GoGo-themed show on his platform. Initially hesitant because I prefer being behind the scenes, I eventually warmed to the idea. After much consideration, I decided to launch my show, spotlighting old school GoGo from its inception. In April 2022, The GoGo Time Machine had its maiden voyage. Initially, the show featured various clips from multiple bands but later transitioned to playing a single show in its entirety. I also established a TikTok channel (@thegogotimemachine) to promote the show and generate a following. The channel gained momentum when I started consistently making daily posts.(More to come)
